Are people really able to become addicted to videogames?

Robert B asked:

Now this is a serious question. There is a very large number of videogames on the market and there are many people who play them. Many psychologists claim videogames are harmful to health and that they have become a very large threat to society. What is your opinion about videogames and why?

Anything can become addictive if you don’t know how to control yourself but have a compulsion to keep doing it, even if it affects your life.

I wouldn’t say that it’s a bad thing necessarily but to control it is to take away a freedom that isn’t that much of a problem, especially if it isn’t hurting someone physically or mentally. It would really only affect you mentally if you were impressionable enough to take it to heart, whatever it was. If you see something on TV and go out and do it, it wasn’t the program’s fault, it was your own for not using self-discipline and controlling your actions. Same with a videogame – it’s only harmful in the wrong hands.

There’s no way I can think of that a game could hurt a person physically (save from atrophy) that could be proven beyond a shadow of a doubt.

They say violence in games and the media causes more violence. How can we know what’s right and wrong when we aren’t given any examples of it?

A little elaborate but I think you get my point.

In my opinion yes they can be addicting. I was addicted to World of Warcraft for almost 3 years…more like 2.5 years. It was pretty bad lol
